5 Job Search Best Practices ePropelr 5 Job Search 'Best Practices' We know the job search process can be overwhelming. Whether youâre in the job market for the first time, or youâre in a job that youâre not happy with, weâre here to help! You may think that that skipping a few steps is ok, but before you jump in, make sure you understand some of the key steps of a successful job search. Here are 5 basic things you should do when youâre in the job market: 1. Update Your Resume: A job search is a process, with many moving parts. If youâre actively working, get in the habit of periodically updating your resume. Your skills are always evolving and your list of accomplishments is growing. Make sure this is reflected on your resume. 2. Network: Take advantage of all the great networking and professional growth opportunities around you. Networking is great for your career and your job search! You may meet your future boss or a link to your future boss. Keep in contact with people you meet who seem sharp, articulate, driven, and well connected. The best way to get a job is by a referral or recommendation from someone you already know. 3. Keep Track of Leads: Organize your job search and work it daily. Donât try to commit names, job descriptions, and application dates to memory. Write things down and keep all of your moving pieces in one central locationâ"like an Excel spreadsheet. Track completed applications, pending applications, active leads, and follow-up messages. You should be able to tell someone how many jobs you applied to last week and easily determine how many hiring managers you need to contact this week. 4. Be Persistent Follow up: When you find a wonderful opportunity, be persistent. Apply first, then follow up with the hiring manager. This shows that youâre interested in the position and it helps her get to know you a bit better. Be prepared to discuss the job and your experience. Keep your resume next to you when youâre making follow-up calls. That way you can reference your skills and experience i f your follow-up call turns into an impromptu phone interview. 5. Be Gracious Show Appreciation: Send thank you notes (or emails) after interviews and to anyone who helps you with your job search. Thank hiring managers for their time, mention something specific that you discussed, and reiterate your interest in the role. Thank your friends, family, and networking connections for introductions, recommendations, and help with leads. Your appreciation and communication will be well received and will encourage them to help you again in the future.
